Tromso for northern lights & snow hunters
This has to be the most magical trip I've ever done! Tromso is way in the Arctic Circle, and you're pretty much guaranteed snow from November to March. It's easy to get to from Edinburgh Airport and since you're so far north you are highly likely to see the northern lights and perhaps the odd moose when you're there.
So now you're thinking, this is way in the Arctic Circle so it's just log cabins and fir trees, well it's not. There's plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. It's also home of the most northern brewery in the world, where you will find a bar which has 50 beers on tap! There were plenty of people in there working there way through the menu when I went in.
If you're looking for somewhere to blow you away and leave you with amazing memories, go here! On this trip I stayed in a log cabin about half an hour outside of Tromso, to make the most of the northern lights. I went on a reindeer sleigh ride and spent an afternoon with Sami people learning about their culture and the way they live. While the reindeer sledding is something relaxing, you could try out the dog sledding, which gave me the biggest buzz ever! It's a very surreal moment in life when you're hurtling through a forest or over a frozen fjord being pulled along by a pack of dogs, the sky is a constant dusk and you're surrounded by the quietness of the deep Arctic snow.
